What producing an event in Philadelphia actually involves

Convention centre work runs on union jurisdictions. The Pennsylvania Convention Center operates under labour agreements that define which trades handle rigging, electrical and freight, and what an outside production crew may and may not touch. That is not an obstacle if it is planned for, but it does decide the schedule and the budget. We confirm the current jurisdictions and labour calls with the venue before the design is finalised, rather than finding out on the dock what our crew is not permitted to do.

Historic ballrooms limit what can be hung. Philadelphia’s older hotel and Broad Street ballrooms carry the same constraints as any protected building: little or no rated overhead rigging, ornate ceilings nothing can attach to, and finishes that need covering rather than clamping. We design to ground support, size screens and lighting positions to the ceiling height that actually exists, and protect floors and walls as part of the build.

Museum venues have conservation rules before they have AV rules. Producing in a museum means working around collections: restricted load-in routes and hours, limits on heat and light near exhibits, and no fixing anything to the structure. Cases and displays often cannot be moved at all, so sightlines and speaker positions have to be designed around what is permanently in the room.

Center City load-in is a street operation. Downtown venues frequently have limited dock access, tight kerb space and time-restricted loading. We plan the load-in window, staging and any permits in advance and break larger builds into shuttle runs, because a production truck cannot simply sit on a Center City street while a crew unloads.
