How to Choose an LED Video Wall for Your Event

An LED video wall is the centerpiece of a lot of events now, from a keynote backdrop to a concert stage to a lobby display. But LED walls are not all the same, and the wrong choice shows up on camera and from the back of the room. This guide covers how to choose an LED video wall for your event: pixel pitch, indoor or outdoor, size, and how a wall compares to projection.

Start with pixel pitch

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the LEDs on the panel. A smaller number means the pixels sit closer together, which means a sharper picture up close. A 1.9mm wall looks clean from a few feet away; a 6mm wall is meant to be seen from farther back. The rule of thumb is simple: the closer your audience sits, and the more the wall will be on camera, the finer the pitch you want.

• Fine pitch, roughly 1.5mm to 2.6mm. Best for stages where cameras push in close, lobby and broadcast walls, and anything shot for a live stream.
• Medium pitch, roughly 2.9mm to 4mm. A common choice for general session backdrops where most of the room sits at a distance.
• Coarse pitch, 5mm and up. Built for large format and outdoor walls seen from far away.

Paying for a finer pitch than your room needs is money spent where no one will notice. Too coarse for a close audience and the picture looks like blocks. Matching pitch to viewing distance is the first decision.

Indoor or outdoor

Indoor and outdoor LED walls are built differently. Outdoor panels are much brighter, measured in nits, so the picture holds up in daylight, and they are rated to handle weather. Indoor panels are tuned for controlled light and closer viewing. If any part of your event is outside or near large windows, that changes the panel you need and the brightness it has to hit. Tell your AV company the exact setting so the wall is specified for the light it will face.

Size the wall to the room and the content

Two things set the size: how far back your audience sits, and what you are putting on the screen. A wall that is too small reads as an afterthought from the back rows; one that is oversized for the content wastes budget and can overpower the stage. Aspect ratio matters too. A 16 by 9 wall suits slides and video; a wide or custom shape can frame a stage or wrap a set. Build the content to the wall resolution so text stays crisp and video fills the frame.

LED wall or projection

Projection still has a place, but the two solve different problems. LED walls win in bright rooms because they make their own light, so ambient light and windows do not wash them out. They also scale to very large sizes and hold color and contrast on camera. Projection can be a lower cost path for a single large image in a room you can darken. The wall is only half the job

A strong panel with a weak signal behind it still looks bad. What makes an LED wall work on the day is the processing, the content, the rigging, and the crew running it. That means a video processor sized to the wall, content built to the right resolution, safe rigging or ground support, and an operator watching the feed.
